Bishopton Fairtrade Steering Group
We raise awareness about fair trade issues by advising people about the need for a more just system of international trade and by promoting the sales of fairly traded goods.   In May, 2007 Bishopton was the first village in Renfrewshire to be awarded Fairtrade Village status.  We are also helping with the campaign to make Renfrewshire a Fairtrade Zone.

What are our Objectives?
  • To promote the concept of Fairtrade and increase the availability of Fairtrade products within Bishopton and surrounding area.
  • To raise awareness of the FAIRTRADE Mark.
  • To ensure continued commitment towards retaining Fairtrade Village Status for Bishopton, by seeking to ensure that the five criteria of a Fairtrade Village as set out in the Fairtrade Foundation’s ‘Fairtrade Town Goals and Action Guide’ continue to be achieved.
  • To encourage workplaces, schools, community groups and churches to work to promote and use Fairtrade products.

How do we achieve our Objectives?

To achieve the objectives, the Group will:
Undertake required activities to achieve Fairtrade Status for Bishopton and the required assessment(s) to confirm achievement of the five goals of a Fairtrade Village.
  • Organise special events for Fairtrade Fortnight in March each year.
  • Conduct an annual assessment to monitor whether the village is meeting the five goals of a Fairtrade Village.
  • Organise ongoing events to increase public awareness of and participation in Fairtrade, such as during Bishopton Week and One World Week.
  • Ensure that the campaign retains a high profile.
  • We succeed in achieving these objectives, and Bishopton has now been awarded the title: “Fairtrade Village”.
